Stress…We all know what thatÂ is, don’t we? The traffic in your life is jamming up! Everything is fast-paced, high pressured, loaded with responsibility…this can begin to really take a toll on you! During a stressful event, the body shifts into red-alert mode and the fight or flight mode kicks in (sound familiar?) Stress can effect your body in many ways including your health! The good news for all of us frugal minded folks is that we can actually do some things very cheap or even free to help us deal with our stress!
Celery -The phytonutrients called phthalides found that celeery has a widely recognized sedative effect, so eat celery raw chopped and even add it to your salad.
Lettuce– This stress reducinf veggie has a calming effect, the small amount of lacucarium, a natural sedative, is found in the milky juice that comes from the the lettuce.
Oats– Besides fighting off high cholesterol, oats produce a calming effect that fight off stress too! Use them in bread recipes, desserts, or for thickening up soups.
Pasta and Rice– It causes a rise in the brain chemical serotonin which has a calming effect on the body.
Cardamom Seeds– These are said to freshen breath, speed digestion, and cheer the heart :). You can make a tea- cover 2 or 3 pods with boiling water and let seep for ten minutes. You can also add two or three pods to your regular pot of tea.
Peppermint– Drink a cup of peppermint tea before you go to bed to relieve tension and to help you sleep.
Tarragon– A tarrogon tea calms the nervous system. Add 1/2 teaspoon of dried tarragon and 1 cup of boiling water, Or use it fresh, snipped into salads or veggies. It can be a great seasoning for soup too

Baking Soda– a soothing bath in baking soda and ginger can relieve stress…just add 1/3 cup of ginger and 1/3 cup of baking soda and enjoy your soak.
Sesame Oil– For a nice relaxation technique warm a few ounces and rub it all over your body from head to toe after you message,Â soak in the tub…
Choose Control– You can;t control everything in your life but that doesn’t mean you should relinquish all control. Take control where you can. You will find that taking a little control will go a long way in fighting stress. Make a list with two headings “Things I can Control” and “Things I can not Control” When you see it in print you will be surprised at how much your life is already under your control. That in itself will help you relief some stress!
Exercise- The endorphins released in 20 minutes of aerobic exercise willÂ have a feel good effect that reduces stress.
Find your Purpose– Knowing your purpose can relieve stress too, and if nothing special comes to mind- CREATE A PURPOSE 🙂 Volunteer at a homeless shelter, make some new friends, Blog…when you involve yourself in something other than your stress…
Nix the Artificial Stimulates- Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol-they may relieve stress, but the effect is only temporary. In the long run, they can make you anxious and cause you more health problems.
Relax– Take some deep breaths. Give your stress-out muscles a break and soak in the nice warm tub or listen to nice relaxing music. Read a good book, pray, take up a hobby. Squeeze your stress away . Make your own inexpensive stress ball by filling a small balloon with baking soda and trying off the end.
Seek Support– It’s easier to cope when someone is there to hold your hand.
